All Aboard the Austin Steam Train!

Bring the whole family on an unforgettable ride around the Texas Hill Country in an Austin Steam Train vintage flyer. Open year-round, these weekend and themed excursions blend the past and present perfectly. The Austin Steam Train Association takes pride in showcasing its historically restored trains. Folks not only get a tour of Austin and its surroundings, but their transportation is an attraction in itself.

Where does the train go?

Depending on the train ride you book, a round-trip can be anywhere from 3 to 6 hours, with stops at one or more of three depots – Cedar Park, Bertram, and Burnet. Austin Steam Train’s signature rides, the Bertram Flyer and Hill Country Flyer, wind through the Texas Hill Country, pass the Short Creek Canyon, and across the wooden trestle bridge at the South San Gabriel River. Ticket holders will glimpse foliage, small towns, and quarries, among other highlights. Customers receive a brochure to help spot these milestones along the route.

What can you see aboard the train?

As part of its mission to restore and preserve train equipment, the association assembles a variety of vintage train cars built in the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s. Each car offers something different in the way of seating arrangements, amenities, and services. Passengers can choose between coach and lounge seating. Most train rides allow ample time to explore the other vintage cars, visit the concession car, and enjoy the open-air vestibules between cars.

What kind of themed excursions are available?

For folks that want to make their train ride experience extra special, themed excursions are available throughout the year, including holiday celebrations, wine tours, and sunset excursions. The most popular train ride by far is the North Pole Flyer.
